Through Drawing Room’s Drawing Connections: Creative Labs programme 2026, developed in partnership with a Southwark neurodiversity family hub, I nurtured an ongoing creative relationship with families and young people through a monthly programme of shared making.

The regularity of the sessions allowed trust and familiarity to grow, creating a learning studio that families could return to, inhabit and shape as their own. Rather than delivering fixed workshops, I created evolving “offers” that responded to participants’ interests, personalities and different ways of communicating. My approach began with paying attention beyond verbal conversation — noticing movement, sound, material curiosity and individual forms of expression — and allowing these to influence the direction of the work.

Across the programme, sculpture become a way of exploring connection and exchange. Conversations around music and analogue technologies led to the creation of a “disco room”, where dancing became a form of drawing. We have also recorded the sounds generated through making — from paper pulping to the embodied actions of handling and transforming materials — exploring sculpture as a sonic experience as well as a visual one. These recordings have became a soundscape for future sessions, while the tactile process of using handheld analogue technology created moments of connection between generations within the space.
